Caring for Your Newly Seeded Lawn: A Guide to Successful Establishment

Establishing a healthy lawn takes
attention and care.

Follow these key steps to ensure your newly seeded lawn thrives and stays healthy for years to come:

1. Watering:

Initial Stage:

Keep the top 20mm of soil consistently damp, but not waterlogged. During the early
stages, you may need to water two to four times a day depending on the season. In summer, more frequent
watering is required, while in autumn and spring, less is needed.
Watering should last for about 5-10 minutes each time. Adjust this based on your observations to avoid both underwatering and over-watering.

Post-Germination (10-20 days):
Once seeds begin to germinate, shift to a deeper watering program.
Water 2-3 times a day for 5-15 minutes each time.

After 40 Days:
Your lawn may be ready for its first mow.
Adjust your watering schedule to twice a day—early morning and early evening (5 to 6 pm in summer).

2. Mowing:

First Mow: When the lawn reaches a height of about 3-4 inches, it’s time for the first mow.
Ensure your mower blades are sharp and set to a higher cutting height to avoid cutting too low.
Do notcollect grass clippings; instead, blow them away with a blower.

Subsequent Mows:
Mow again 2-3 weeks after the first cut, at the same height, with a catcher and continue the same from now on.

3. Reseeding and Weeds

Bare Spots: If there are any bare areas where seeds haven’t germinated, after the first mow is a
good time to reseed.

Weed Management: Don’t worry about weeds until after the second mow.
At that point, you can use a herbicide, such as Tordon Brush Killer, following the label instructions.

4. Fertilising:

After Second Mow: Apply a balanced NPK fertilizer to boost growth, this will help fill in any gaps in the lawn.

Ongoing Care: Regularly mowing, fertilising, and use of timely herbicide applications to manage weeds, pests and moss.

5. Long-term Maintenance

Annual Care: After one year, it’s recommended to dethatch and aerate (renovate) your lawn to
maintain its health and vitality.

Remember, the goal in the early stages is to promote proper root growth and establish a strong, healthy
lawn.
Consistent care during this period will set the foundation for a vibrant and resilient lawn.
